UKVI sets B1 as the minimum for a Student visa, but universities and colleges frequently ask for more than the legal minimum. ISE II at B2 is accepted by a wide range of UK universities. Always check what your specific institution requires rather than assuming the visa minimum is enough.
If you only need speaking and listening, for example for citizenship, settlement or a family route application, you need GESE instead.
Trinity’s Secure English Language Tests (SELTs) are approved by the UK Visa and Immigration Dept for visa and settlement purposes. The Integrated Skills in English exam (ISE) from B1 to C1 level are approved for applications for a variety of Worker visas, and for Study visas.
ISE is widely recognised around the world by governments and institutions as providing reliable evidence of English language proficiency. The test has a strong focus on real language performance and promotes the development of transferable skills for academic study and employability. ISE feature two assessment modules, one for speaking and listening with a professional examiner, and one for reading and writing. These must both be taken on the same day as a Secure English Language Test.
Trinity’s Integrated Skills in English exam (ISE) for SELT purposes is:
ISE is a long exam and both modules have to be passed. Fail one, and the certificate does not issue. Two hours of reading and writing under exam conditions is a different skill from being good at English, and the speaking module has a controlled structure that catches people out if they have not practised it.
